Rick Adelman, a prominent figure in basketball coaching, passed away at the age of 79. Adelman’s journey in the NBA is marked by his impressive trajectory from coaching a community college team to leading the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals twice. His coaching career spanned 23 seasons with four teams, including Portland, Sacramento, and Houston.

The NBA Coaches Association announced his death on Monday through a statement on social media. The statement did not specify the cause of death or the location.

During his coaching career, Adelman guided star players such as Clyde Drexler, Chris Webber, and Yao Ming. His teams made the playoffs 16 times and achieved at least 50 victories in 11 seasons. Adelman is distinguished as one of the 11 coaches in NBA history to have secured over 1,000 regular-season wins.

As a player, Adelman was a 6-foot-1 guard who played during the Trail Blazers’ debut season in 1970-71. Over seven years, he played for five different NBA teams before retiring in 1975. After his playing career ended, Adelman turned his attention to coaching, initially aiming for positions at high schools or lower college levels.

He enjoyed six successful seasons at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. In 1983, Jack Ramsay, then coach of the Trail Blazers, brought Adelman onboard as an assistant coach.
