Scott Pelley, a prominent journalist and former anchor of ‘CBS Evening News,’ was dismissed from CBS News on Tuesday. This termination occurred following disagreements over the direction of ’60 Minutes,’ a highly regarded news program in the United States.
Pelley, who joined CBS in 1989, aired his grievances during a staff meeting on Monday. He accused the network’s editor in chief, Bari Weiss, of ‘murdering 60 Minutes,’ citing recent changes, including the removal of the program’s leadership and two on-air correspondents.
Nick Bilton, the new ’60 Minutes’ executive producer who joined last week, informed staff of Pelley’s departure in a memo on Tuesday night. CBS News refrained from providing any comments. However, a formal letter obtained by The New York Times indicated that Pelley’s termination was ‘for cause, effective immediately.’
In an interview on Tuesday evening, Pelley expressed his deep commitment to ’60 Minutes,’ despite his firing. He recounted his extensive career, highlighting the risks he took, reporting from combat zones in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine.
