A Legacy of Blade Sharpening in Chicago

For over four decades, Tony Delciello, an immigrant from Italy, navigated Chicago’s South Side with a distinct green and red cart, offering blade sharpening services. Residents waited eagerly for the sound of his cart’s bell, signaling it was time to bring out dull garden shears, axes, and kitchen knives. Delciello charged only a dollar or two per blade, revitalizing countless edges.

After returning to Italy, Delciello’s cart found a new owner in John Carmody, a long-time Chicagoan from Morgan Park. Carmody, a retired fire department engineer, was drawn to the sharpening trade after spotting a ‘For Sale’ sign on Delciello’s cart. Despite initial skepticism from Delciello and a challenging negotiation, Carmody secured the cart and its storied past.

The cart, rich with history and stolen once in 2007, was a notable sight in the community. Carmody admired its craftsmanship, especially the new wheels from Hoosier Buggy Shop in Indiana, and appreciated Delciello’s handwritten maintenance guide.

Starting his journey during an Easter egg hunt in 2023, Carmody embraced the role of neighborhood sharpener. Residents quickly noticed the change in service, yet responded enthusiastically. District 22 police officers and local social media groups took interest, boosting his visibility and sparking community engagement.

Carmody moved beyond Delciello’s routine, taking the cart to block parties and becoming a familiar figure among local families. While Delciello worked six days a week, Carmody preferred weekends and adjusted his activities for weather conditions.

Personal touches added by Carmody include paper angels from appreciative customers, a leather apron, goggles, and a mask for safety. Unlike Delciello, Carmody uses a unique approach to the bell, tapping it with a golf club when stationary.

As cooler months approach, Carmody plans to focus on garage appointments while maintaining a presence in the community. Although their communication faded, Carmody cherishes his last exchanges with Delciello, who, despite initial reluctance, acknowledged the continuation of his legacy.
