In Muscatine, Iowa, community members gathered on Tuesday evening at a local football field to honor a mother and five siblings who were victims of domestic violence. The victims were killed a day earlier, and the community sought to pay their respects.

Muscatine Police Chief Tony Kies addressed the crowd, identifying the victims as Lisa McFarland, 51; Dakota Whitlow, 32; Austin Harris, 29; Ryle McFarland, 20; Mark McFarland, 16; and Ryan McFarland Jr., 13. During the vigil, Johnathan McFarland shared his grief over losing his family, including his father, who, according to police, committed the tragic acts before taking his own life when confronted by officers.

Johnathan expressed love and sorrow for his father despite the circumstances, saying, “No matter what is being told to me, I will always love and miss my dad.” Audrey Perdue, the fiancee of Whitlow, spoke of her heartbreak and Whitlow’s untapped potential, emphasizing the loss felt by the affected community.

Police discovered four of the victims at a home in Muscatine, a city with a population of around 24,000, located approximately 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids. Officers found McFarland on a nearby trail, where he took his own life while in conversation with the police. Additionally, two relatives of McFarland were later found dead in different locations in the city. One was discovered in a home, and the other in a business establishment.

The police confirmed McFarland had a criminal record but did not disclose further details. The incident in Iowa marked the sixth family mass killing of the year in the U.S., according to James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University. Fox manages a database of mass killings in collaboration with The Associated Press and USA Today. A seventh incident occurred near Buffalo, New York, as of Monday.

Mass killings are defined as events where four or more people are killed within a 24-hour period, excluding the perpetrator. There have been 13 mass killings in the U.S. this year so far.
