Dodgers Defy Criticism with Strategic Success

The Los Angeles Dodgers often face criticism for their approach to baseball, with claims of ruining the sport. Critics include some fans, media personnel, and rival team owners favoring a salary cap for increased profits. Yet, just a few years ago, the Dodgers were dismissed as the sport’s laughingstock.

Despite winning the 2020 World Series, detractors labeled it a “Mickey Mouse ring,” questioning its validity. In 2021, the Dodgers won 106 games but fell to the Atlanta Braves in the playoffs. After securing 111 victories in 2022, they exited in the NLDS against the San Diego Padres. Their 2023 season ended early against the Arizona Diamondbacks after 100 wins. Critics called them “chokers,” referencing their lack of full-season titles since 1988.

The Dodgers consistently maintain high payrolls. Nonetheless, they’ve lost to teams with fewer wins, viewed now by some as villains, reminiscent of the late 1990s Yankees.

“Many opinions about the Dodgers are lazy,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned in an interview. He highlighted their deeper strategies, including draft strategy, player development, and international talent acquisitions as factors of their success.

Miguel Rojas echoed this sentiment, emphasizing talent over money. He noted several teams have similar payrolls without achieving the same results, underscoring the Dodgers’ unique position.

In the 2025 World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, players like Max Muncy, Miguel Rojas, and Will Smith played crucial roles. Muncy, acquired cheaply, delivered a key home run, while Rojas tied the game later. Smith, a first-round draft pick, emerged as a top catcher.

Acknowledging the team’s recent contributors, Roberts credited their thorough talent search. Unheralded players like Tommy Edman, NLCS MVP, and reliever Will Klein have significantly boosted the team.

“Payroll provides depth,” Roberts acknowledged, yet he highlighted team dynamics and development as pivotal elements, challenging the notion that financial resources alone secure victories.

Dodgers acquisitions in the off-season, including Kyle Tucker and Edwin Diaz, faced challenges. Despite Tucker’s underperformance and Diaz’s injury struggles, the team’s bullpen, featuring players like Kyle Hurt and Edgardo Henriquez, continues to demonstrate effective development.

As Roberts suggested, identifying talent transcends mere financial discussions, spotlighting the Dodgers’ strategic prowess.
