Eight months before the season began, Libertyville lineman Colten Siebert felt an urgency. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 255 pounds, Siebert had completed a strong junior season, playing well at left guard and center. However, the Wildcats’ early exit in the Class 6A playoffs did not sit well with him. Determined for change, he declared, “I want to be a captain, a leader, and the best player I can be.” His motivation grew from talks with his father about upholding a legacy.
Siebert’s transformation started in the weight room. He consistently attended sessions, adding extra lifts to his routine. He also took on the role of guiding younger teammates, pushing them to improve. This leadership initiative persisted into his senior season. Libertyville, with a 6-2 record and undefeated in conference play, secured a share of the North Suburban Conference title. This followed a narrow 14-10 victory against Lake Zurich.
Siebert faced a leadership test when the team lost its first two games of the season. Following a loss to Naperville North, he and the other captains organized a players-only meeting in Butler Lake Park. They discussed solutions and watched game footage for nearly two hours. “The meeting had one focus: How do we fix this?” Siebert stated. The discussion instilled a renewed urgency, resulting in the team overcoming the challenge of being 0-2 and securing their first win.
Libertyville then defeated conference powerhouse Warren, a game dispersed over two days due to weather delays. Siebert reflected, “Facing Warren didn’t faze us. We knew our potential.” He emphasized increased physicality to achieve victory.
As a two-way starter, Siebert has fortified the team’s physical identity. The Wildcats’ win against Lake Zurich, a rematch Siebert eagerly anticipated, exemplifies this. “We vividly remembered last year’s loss, motivating our readiness,” Siebert shared. The game was crucial, involving intense physical play where every yard mattered. With merely 19 seconds remaining, a decisive touchdown clinched the conference championship for Libertyville, promising a lasting memory for Siebert.
Off the field, Siebert’s influence is substantial. He consistently fosters a positive team culture, evidenced in arranging celebratory photos with linemen after significant victories. Libertyville coach Tim Budge praised Siebert as an anchor for both the offensive and defensive lines. “He helps with blocking schemes and has emerged as a vocal leader,” Budge noted.
Siebert has embraced his defensive role, challenging himself to play both ways since the offseason. “Back in December, I approached the coaches eager to contribute defensively,” Siebert explained. Despite its novelty, he committed to mastering defense, enhancing his strength and techniques. His motto, “All gas, no brakes,” pushes him to excel, regardless of fatigue.
Offensive efforts have yielded over 1,000 yards each in both rushing and passing. Defensively, Siebert transitioned from tackle to nose position, achieving 17 tackles with four for losses and 1.5 sacks. His understanding of offensive linemen’s tendencies provides him with strategic advantages, particularly enjoying engagements like double teams.
Teammates recognize Siebert’s depth of commitment to team success. Libertyville senior linebacker Mason Roe described Siebert’s intensity as supportive, “Sometimes he challenges us vocally, but it’s from a place of love. He desires the best for the team.”
Despite not seeking personal accolades, Siebert embraces his role. “I’ve never been in the spotlight. For me, it’s about maximizing my team’s success. Although individual glory isn’t mine, knowing I fulfill my duties is what counts,” Siebert concluded.
