Crown Point’s Tyce Custy’s Leadership and Performance

1 hour ago 0

Senior Quarterback Demonstrates Maturity and Leadership

Crown Point’s head football coach, Craig Buzea, describes his interactions with senior quarterback Tyce Custy as similar to speaking with someone much older. Custy, who joined Crown Point from Valparaiso after a family move, exemplifies maturity by sharing playing time with teammates.

Last season, Custy shared quarterback duties with Cooper Malaski, who has transitioned to tight end. This season, he shares the position with sophomore AJ Summers. Custy reflects on this dynamic, noting that it gives opponents a lot to prepare for and benefits the team.

Custy’s Performance and Team Success

Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 190 pounds, Custy is a Lindenwood recruit focused on winning. The Bulldogs, currently undefeated, can clinch their fifth consecutive Duneland Athletic Conference title with a victory at Michigan City.

Coach Buzea praises Custy’s maturity and team focus. Despite being a Division I talent, Custy accepts sharing the field with another talented quarterback. Buzea notes, “He has never shown frustration. With AJ, we become a tougher team to defend.” Custy completed 85 of 120 passes for 1,353 yards, 12 touchdowns, and only three interceptions this season. He also contributed with a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown.

Building Relationships and Team Dynamics

Senior wide receiver Kingston Connelly, who caught 33 passes for 554 yards and seven touchdowns, appreciates his relationship with Custy. Despite starting quietly, Custy quickly impressed teammates with his skill and leadership.

Custy’s experience includes playing on Valparaiso’s freshman and junior varsity teams. His transition to Crown Point went smoothly as he completed 70 passes for 1,069 yards and nine touchdowns in his junior year.

Development and Mentorship

Coach Buzea highlights Custy’s significant development from junior to senior year. Initially quiet in communication, Custy has improved in leadership qualities. Again, having already committed before the season, Custy plays without the pressure of earning a scholarship.

Quarterbacks coach Nick Wellman has also played a crucial role in Custy’s growth, bringing his experience as a former player and coach. Custy’s father, Brian, a former standout safety, maintains influence as a mentor throughout Tyce’s career.

Future Aspirations

Custy plans to graduate after the first semester and transition to Lindenwood University. He aims to continue improving and achieving his dream of playing Division I football.

Before leaving, Custy believes his team has potential for further growth. Despite their undefeated record, he acknowledges room for improvement and appreciates the support of his teammates and coaches.
