ICE Adjusts Reporting Policy on Detainee Deaths Amid Criticism

3 weeks ago 0

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is under scrutiny to enhance medical care within its facilities following the deaths of 18 detainees in the first five months of the year. In response, the agency is changing its policy on reporting deaths.

Policy Change

ICE will no longer require the reporting of deaths occurring within 30 days after a person’s release from custody. This decision was communicated in a memo from acting director David Venturella to ICE employees.

Background

The change comes amid growing concerns over the rising number of immigrants dying while in government custody. The pressure mounts as the agency faces criticism and calls for improved healthcare standards for detainees.
