In a dramatic moment at the baseball field, Arizona’s Ildemaro Vargas and the Dodgers’ Max Muncy collided near first base, leading to minor injuries for both players. Despite the scare, both are reported to be okay.
The Incident
The collision happened during the fifth inning, with the Diamondbacks hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers. Max Muncy hit a ground ball near first base, and Ildemaro Vargas fielded the ball behind the bag. Seeing an opportunity, Vargas took off running as pitcher Ryne Nelson was not covering the base.
Attempting to beat Muncy, Vargas ran full speed into him. The forceful collision threw both players into the air, landing them on opposite sides of the base. The stadium grew silent as the players lay on the field, prompting trainers to quickly attend to them.
Player Reactions
After the game, Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte expressed his shock, stating he had never seen anything like it in his ten years of playing. Both players remained on the ground for several minutes before eventually reaching their respective dugouts.
Medical Evaluations
Muncy experienced shortness of breath and was assessed for a concussion. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced that Muncy would sit out Friday’s game against the Angels, which was already a scheduled day off for him. Muncy expressed concern for Vargas and mentioned feeling sore but expected to recover soon.
Vargas was bruised on his left side, covering his thigh, ribs, and neck. Fortunately, all X-rays came back negative. Despite the bruises, Vargas informed manager Torey Lovullo he would be ready to participate in Friday’s game if necessary.
“My whole body feels like I ran into a truck, but thankfully all the exams and tests were negative,” Vargas said.
This incident could have resulted in more severe injuries. Thankfully, both players avoided serious harm and remain under medical observation.
