In a recent WNBA game, DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky faced ejection after committing a Flagrant 2 foul against Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever. Carrington reacted by posting ‘WHITE PRIVILEGE’ on social media, tagging the Fever.
The incident occurred when Cunningham, who is white, attempted a fast-break layup in the game’s first quarter. Carrington, who is Black, hit Cunningham in the head and neck, causing Cunningham to fall as the shot went in. Following the event, Cunningham immediately rose, confronted Carrington, and pushed her before being restrained by a teammate.
The referees reviewed the play and upgraded it to a Flagrant 2, citing Carrington’s windup, impact, and follow-through. The Fever ultimately triumphed over the Sky with a score of 90-86.
Additionally, Caitlin Clark of the Fever was penalized with a technical foul in the third quarter after making contact with a referee while being forced out of bounds. This technical foul marked Clark’s eighth of the season, leading to a one-game suspension for the upcoming Indiana game. Clark asserted that the contact was accidental and unspoken. She expressed hope that the league would revoke the foul through further review.
“She said I ran into her,” Clark noted regarding the referee. “I have already watched it on the tape. So, we’ll let the league decide. But, it wasn’t anything intentional or anything. So, I hope it gets rescinded. And, nothing was said.”
Fever coach Stephanie White described Clark’s technical foul as “a bad call.”
Cunningham has been vocal in defending Clark against physical plays by opponents and has gained recognition in the league recently. Last month, Cunningham supported excluding transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports, leading to limited protests during Fever games in Seattle and Portland.
The issue of transgender participation in women’s basketball remains under discussion, as highlighted by WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert in a memo to teams.
