Newark Mayor to Reduce Police Presence at Delaney Hall

3 weeks ago 0

On Thursday, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced a reduction in the city’s police presence outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center. This decision follows weeks of protests at the facility, which is managed by the private prison company GEO Group. The demonstrations occasionally became chaotic, involving local, state, and federal officers.

Mayor Baraka emphasized that the city would not use taxpayer funds to protect a privately-owned facility. He stated, “We will not risk our officers’ safety and spend on an already tight budget.” The mayor credited a recent decrease in unrest to the city’s actions and stated that, starting Friday, the Newark police would focus on traffic management and public safety. Their aim is to protect both protesters and motorists.

It remains unclear if federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or New Jersey State Police will increase their presence at Delaney Hall. Typically, state police assist local law enforcement upon request. If Newark seeks their help, they must reach out accordingly.

Sean Higgins, spokesperson for Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, stated, “The governor focuses on advocating humane treatment for detainees at Delaney Hall. We maintain communication with Newark and encourage peaceful protests.”

ICE reaffirmed security around Delaney Hall, stating, “The perimeter is fully closed. No breaches occurred. Our operations continue without disruption. Anyone obstructing or disrupting law enforcement will face prosecution.”
