Raúl Castro has been indicted for his alleged involvement in the shoot-down of two civilian aircraft in 1996. Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., highlighted the charges against the former Cuban President during a segment on ‘Sunday Night in America’. The indictment relates to the incident that resulted in the deaths of four American pilots.
Raúl Castro made a public appearance on state television in Havana during an Interior Ministry celebration, marking his first after the Trump administration charged him with murder. This appearance follows the unsealed indictment accusing him of conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals and destruction of aircraft. Castro, now 95 years old, was also charged on four counts of murder related to the incident involving planes operated by Brothers to the Rescue.
On February 1996, Cuban military aircraft allegedly shot down the unarmed civilian planes flown by the exile group, resulting in the deaths of Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre Jr., Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales. Prosecutors claim these planes were outside Cuban territorial limits when they were targeted.
The indictment was revealed amidst increased tensions in the Caribbean. President Donald Trump earlier commended the indictment, expressing satisfaction for Cuban Americans who seek justice against the communist regime.
“We have big news on Cuba… A lot of people have suffered very big, at levels that few people would understand,” Trump stated.
The indictment led to a symbolic pressure campaign similar to Trump’s strategies against Venezuela and Nicolás Maduro. Christine Balling, a Cuba expert at the Institute of World Politics, compared Castro’s indictment to measures taken against Maduro, although she noted Castro’s advanced age as a factor potentially reducing the likelihood of further actions.
The indictment emphasizes U.S. commitment to accountability. The effort against Castro sends a clear message about U.S. support for the end of the Castro regime. Despite ongoing political dynamics, tensions with Cuba are not expected to rise.
