Sikh Traditions Thrive in Ohio

Photographer Akash Pamarthy has spent several years capturing the essence of the Sikh religious community in Ohio. His work presents a unique perspective on how this community maintains its traditions while integrating into American life.

Embracing Dual Identities

Agam Singh Brar, a seven-year-old, embodies the intersection of American and Sikh cultures. Living in Twinsburg, Ohio, Agam plays with his cousins, blending the vibrancy of his cultural heritage with the world around him. His father, who moved to the U.S. seeking better opportunities, ensures Agam grows up grounded in both worlds.

Sikhism’s Influence in Ohio

Originating in Punjab, India, Sikhism has found a foothold in Ohio. Pamarthy observes how the community blends traditional Sikh values with a modern American lifestyle, paying homage to their roots while building new legacies.

Sikhism has always fascinated me. The faith is deeply community-oriented, focusing on equality, resilience, and service,” says Pamarthy.

The Richfield gurdwara, Ohio’s first established Sikh place of worship, reflects these values as families gather for Sunday services, partaking in hymns and readings from the Guru Granth Sahib.

Community and Service

The langar hall, synonymous with equality and service, offers free meals to all visitors, standing as a testament to Sikh principles.

In Solon, Ohio, the Gurudwara Dashmesh Darbar strengthens cultural identity through turban-tying classes, focusing on discipline and respect. These workshops help the younger generation navigate their dual identities.

Expanding Community Presence

Ohio’s gurdwaras, numbering nearly 10 by 2025, symbolize growth and unity. The Gurudwara in Solon represents the community’s ongoing efforts to preserve faith and establish American roots.

Diversity in Action

Officer Sukhvir Singh Grewal, Ohio’s first turban-wearing police officer, exemplifies increasing diversity in law enforcement, highlighting the inclusion of Sikh identity in different professions.

Dr. Sukhbir Singh runs a veterinary clinic, serving the Niles community, merging his Indian roots with American life. Similarly, Rajinder Singh Brar’s role in the trucking industry represents economic stability for many Sikh families in Ohio.

The political landscape also sees Sikh representation. Vikramjit Sandhu’s electoral success in Richfield Township exemplifies the community’s growing influence.

Maintaining Cultural Heritage

The Sikh community in Ohio faces challenges but remains steadfast. Their history of displacement and resilience continues to inspire new generations.

Traditions such as the Baraat and Chooda ceremonies persist, symbolizing unity and support within the community. The preparation of roti for the langar connects familial traditions with collective service.

During his project, Pamarthy was particularly influenced by Jagbir Singh Dhillon, an 82-year-old immigrant whose life lessons reflected patience and kindness. Their conversations and shared experiences offered Pamarthy a profound understanding of life and relationships.

Through these interactions, Pamarthy found persistence and determination in himself, gaining insight from the Sikh community’s unwavering faith and identity.
