A Dutch virologist known for his contributions to Covid vaccine development is currently under scrutiny by U.S. federal investigators. Dr. Vincent Munster has been accused of conspiring to bring vials of deactivated mpox and other biological materials into the United States. These charges were outlined in a criminal complaint revealed last week.
Dr. Munster, who is 53 years old, leads the virus ecology section at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, an NIH research center in Montana. His work in virology has previously earned him recognition. However, this incident has placed him at the center of a legal and security controversy.
In addition to Dr. Munster, Claude Kwe, a 38-year-old research assistant from Cameroon, is facing similar charges. They were apprehended by customs officials at the Detroit airport. Both were returning from the Republic of Congo, where they had been working amidst an mpox epidemic, according to prosecutors in Michigan’s Eastern District.
The case has sparked political and public debate. Right-wing influencer Laura Loomer has accused the institute of concealing the situation. This has aligned her with a segment of conservative advocates who have turned Dr. Munster’s case into a cause célèbre.
This issue has also caught the attention of White Coat Waste Project, an animal rights organization. They were the first to make the investigation public through a whistleblower’s report. The organization opposes public funding for scientific testing on animals. It has criticized Dr. Munster for conducting experiments they describe as “reckless and cruel” on primates and bats, claiming these experiments pose significant biosafety and national security risks.
