CDC Identifies Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Linked to Taco Bell Lettuce

Federal health officials have identified shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell as the cause of a cyclosporiasis outbreak. Cyclosporiasis is an illness caused by a parasite transmitted through food or water contaminated with feces. This outbreak has affected multiple states including Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

CDC Advisory

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises against consuming shredded lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in the aforementioned states. This precaution is part of efforts to prevent further spread of the illness.

Lettuce Distribution

Taylor Farms, a major lettuce supplier, was linked as the source of the lettuce to Taco Bell. Their products are available at various grocery stores like Safeway, Whole Foods, Target, and Walmart. However, Taylor Farms stated that none of their branded salad kits, which do not contain iceberg lettuce, were associated with the outbreak. They are voluntarily recalling iceberg lettuce from central Mexico to ensure safety.

FDA Investigation

The Food and Drug Administration indicated that other brands, restaurants, or retailers might be implicated as investigations continue. Consumers are advised to check the sources of lettuce they consume, whether it’s bagged or from whole heads, to avoid potential contamination.

“Be cautious about where your lettuce comes from,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s health department leader.
