Nic Smith, a Kentucky Wildcats defensive lineman, has tragically passed away at the age of 20, as announced by the football program. He spent the previous season as a redshirt freshman.
“Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew and loved him,” said Kentucky coach Will Stein on X.
The university stated that campus police were alerted to a possible body in an on-campus residence hall. Following this, the university confirmed Smith’s death. An official from the university noted that the University of Kentucky Police Department is collaborating with the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner. Initial findings of the investigation suggest no foul play was involved.
“This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory,” Coach Stein added in his statement.
Smith, a sophomore, studied in the community leadership and development program at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Nicknamed “Happy” and “Big Happ,” he was fondly remembered in the Kentucky athletic community.
He showcased his athletic talents in both football and basketball during his time at Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia.
