The biographical film “Reagan,” with Dennis Quaid portraying former President Ronald Reagan, is set for a return to theaters. This release coincides with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. New scenes have been added to the film, enhancing its narrative.
According to Deadline, limited screenings will occur on July 4 in over a dozen cities. A broader release in September will see the film in 600 theaters. This rerelease includes an additional 10 minutes of footage not present in the original version.
“The additional scenes include moments between Reagan and his wife Nancy (Penelope Ann Miller) in the Oval Office, a scene between Reagan and his alcoholic father, Jack, and scenes at the Reagans’ ranch near Santa Barbara.”
In its first run, the film grossed over $30 million globally, as reported by Box Office Mojo.
Director Sean McNamara expressed relief at reintegrating significant scenes in the extended cut. He remarked on the difficulty of excluding such material initially.
‘Reagan’ Screenwriter Claims Oscars’ DEI Requirements Excluded Film from Best Picture Consideration
Quaid’s portrayal of Reagan drew comparisons to the rise of Reagan himself. Based on books by Paul Kengor, who collaborated with filmmakers, the film showcases a stark contrast between its audience approval rating and critics’ assessment.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the “Reagan” film exhibits notable differences in its scores. The critics’ score stands at 17%, while the audience rating reaches 98%.
Noteworthy is the comparison of this disparity to Reagan’s presidential victory in 1980. Kengor recalled his literary works’ evolution to a cinematic experience.
“The disparity reminds me of Reagan’s landslide win in 1984. He won 49 out of 50 states, securing about 98% of the states, and dominated the Electoral College with 525 votes to 13.”
Critics from various publications offered harsh reviews, labeling the film as “interminable,” “uninterested in its subject,” and “worthless” historically.
Kengor highlighted the critics’ minority position. He encouraged students to consider Reagan’s popular support evidenced by his electoral success. This serves as a counter to negative academic critiques.
Fox News’ Cortney O’Brien contributed further coverage of the film’s media reception.
