After the conviction of Karmelo Anthony for murder, the reactions from both families have been strikingly different. The parents of Anthony claim injustice following their son’s guilty verdict, while the father of the victim, Austin Metcalf, has expressed forgiveness for his son’s killer.
Upon hearing the verdict, Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, delivered an emotional statement in court. According to CBS, Metcalf shared his sorrow for Anthony, acknowledging the young man’s impending sentence. He expressed, “I’ll even say this: I had a little bit of sorrow because I’m human; and that poor boy is fixing to experience a life that I would not wish upon anyone.”
Anthony received a 35-year prison sentence after being found guilty of fatally stabbing Metcalf during a high school track meet altercation last year. Anthony has since filed a notice to appeal the conviction.
The Anthony family maintains that the trial was unfair. In an interview with CBS, Anthony’s father, Andrew Anthony, said, “They did a number on us.” He expressed frustration over the perceived mishandling of their son’s case and underscored their belief that justice was not served as intended.
The confrontation at the track meet remains the latest point of contention in a case that continues to draw public interest. High-profile and controversial, this trial has subjected both families to ongoing threats and harassment. Last August, the Metcalfs experienced a terrifying incident when the SWAT team responded to 911 calls at their home in Frisco, Texas, reported CBS. Jeff Metcalf mentioned ongoing death threats and personal information being leaked.
Despite these challenges, support for both families persists. People gathered outside the Collin County Courthouse to hear the trial’s outcome. Austin Metcalf’s final post on social media, showing his faith and hope for the future, has been revisited by many since his death.
Social media has also seen activity supporting Karmelo Anthony. A fan page titled “standwithkarmeloanthony” emerged on Instagram, accumulating hundreds of followers. Anthony’s girlfriend, Valeria Perez, appears to promote this page, encouraging support for him online.
