California Senator Confronted Over Israel and Gaza Stance

California state Senator Scott Wiener faced pro-Palestinian protestors at San Francisco’s Trans March. The demonstration targeted his views on Israel and Gaza. Video footage, viewed over 5 million times, showed activists urging him to leave the event. The confrontation occurred at the annual transgender rights march and rally on Friday.

Wiener, who is Jewish, described these events as intimidating, involving both verbal and physical harassment. He left for safety. In an online post, Wiener mentioned a group that approached him, surrounded him, and made physical contact. He decided it wasn’t safe to continue at the park, marking the first time he couldn’t participate in the march.

He recounted statements made by demonstrators about his ‘Israeli handlers’ and other extreme remarks. Earlier in the week, a separate incident occurred where a man cornered him at a bar, verbally abusing him and his staff before being removed. Wiener noted that harassment crosses a line from mere opposition.

The incident comes as Wiener campaigns to replace former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in California’s 11th Congressional District. His policy stances, including those on housing, LGBTQ rights, and the Israel-Gaza conflict, have come under scrutiny.

Footage shows an engagement with the person filming Wiener. The protestor praised Wiener’s trans rights initiatives but criticized his stance on Gaza, suggesting he did not belong at the event. During the exchange, some wore balaclavas, shouting insults and expletives at him.

Remarks included: “We hate you,” and calls for him to leave. The person filming expressed disappointment, stating Wiener was supportive of trans people but terrible on Gaza. Wiener remained silent throughout, despite being pressed for comments on Gaza.

Dimitry Yakoushkin, who posted the video, claimed Wiener was expelled for the first time from the march. Yakoushkin supports Wiener’s opponent, Democrat Connie Chan, although there’s no evidence of affiliation with her campaign.

Responses emerged from across the political spectrum. Some conservatives, like Amy Reichert, highlighted a ‘civil war’ within the Democratic Party. Former LA mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt criticized Wiener in light of the event.

The Combat Antisemitism Movement highlighted the incident, while Democratic Rep. Kevin Mullin reiterated it was unacceptable. He emphasized there’s no room for hate speech, harassment, or violence in politics or elsewhere.

Wiener’s views on Gaza have evolved. Once critical of Israeli actions but refraining from labeling them genocide, his perspective shifted in January. He acknowledged Israel’s actions as genocidal, balancing this with the sensitive association of genocide to the Holocaust.

Despite accusations from human-rights organizations, Wiener affirms Israel’s right to exist. He supports its defensive capabilities but opposes funding offensive actions against Palestinians, emphasizing peace and democracy.

Wiener’s track record in LGBTQ rights has been noteworthy. He has authored legislation like SB 107 in 2022, offering refuge to transgender individuals, and introduced SB 497 to enhance protections. He has championed various measures for the LGBTQ community, previously chairing the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus.
