Phil Mickelson has been expelled from The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California, following accusations of unwanted physical contact with a female employee. Golf Digest reported that multiple sources confirmed Mickelson’s removal from the private club where he has played for many years.
The incident reportedly took place earlier in the spring. The female employee reported nonconsensual and inappropriate physical contact by Mickelson in the clubhouse. The club launched an investigation, which concluded with asking Mickelson to leave the premises.
A spokesperson for Mickelson stated that any misunderstanding has been resolved, emphasizing that Mickelson is handling a serious family health issue. His spokesperson also mentioned uncertainty over when Mickelson might return to professional golf.
The Farms Golf Club issued a statement saying that they conducted a thorough investigation and took decisive action to protect their staff. The club also confirmed they are unable to discuss further details to ensure privacy and safety.
This event marks another challenge for Mickelson, who was once celebrated in the golf world. The six-time major champion faced legal issues in 2016 when he was a relief defendant in an insider trading case. Although not criminally charged, he repaid nearly $1 million from a single trade.
More controversy followed Mickelson’s involvement with LIV Golf, a Saudi-funded golf tour. His strong statements about the Saudis resulted in loss of sponsorships, affecting his public image.
Mickelson achieved a significant milestone by becoming the oldest major champion in history with his 2021 PGA Championship victory. However, his recent actions and controversies have overshadowed his achievements. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia announced it will end its funding for LIV Golf after the current year.
