The Stanley Cup Final between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights has been a rollercoaster. After thrilling games, the series returned to Raleigh for Game 5 tied at 2-2. Despite a slow start, penalties remained a constant theme.
Vegas’ Pavel Dorofeyev scored first with a power-play goal following a penalty by Carolina’s Nikolaj Ehlers. Just minutes later, Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal tied the game with a deflection, marking his fifth consecutive game with a goal, a record-setting streak in Stanley Cup Final history.
In the second period, Carolina capitalized on penalties by Vegas. Following a Jeremy Lauzon penalty, Brayden McNabb committed a cross-checking foul, putting the Hurricanes on another power play. Andrei Svechnikov scored, giving Carolina a 2-1 lead. Sebastian Aho soon added another for the Hurricanes.
Vegas encountered further issues when key player William Karlsson left the game and did not return. In the third period, Vegas captain Mark Stone’s high stick penalty, which resulted in a double minor, led to Svechnikov scoring again, extending Carolina’s lead to 4-1.
Vegas attempted a comeback with Dorofeyev netting his second goal, narrowing the gap. As time wound down, Ehlers’ delay-of-game penalty gave Vegas a 6-on-4 power play advantage after they pulled their goalie. Despite good scoring opportunities, including a key save by the Hurricanes’ Bussi, Carolina held on for a 4-2 victory.
With a 3-2 series lead, Carolina heads back to Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena on Sunday. A win there would secure the Hurricanes their second Stanley Cup in franchise history.
