Over the past weekend, Serena Williams shared that her comeback to professional tennis was driven by her desire for her daughters, Olympia and Adira, to witness her play. ‘I’ve achieved more victories than most will ever have, so it is not vital for me, and I must keep reminding myself that there’s nothing to prove,’ expressed Williams, the holder of 23 Grand Slam singles titles. ‘I have nothing to lose, and everything here is simply to gain.’
At age 44, Williams made a return in her first match since the 2022 US Open, participating under a wild card entry at the HSBC Championships held at Queen’s Club in London on Tuesday. Her family, including daughters Olympia and Adira and husband Alexis Ohanian, attended the event, fulfilling Williams’ objective. Regardless of the intention, she and Canadian talent Victoria Mboko, 19, had the prospect of securing a trophy. Despite having never played doubles together, Williams and Mboko displayed excellent coordination, leading to a straight-set win against Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. They were scheduled to face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the doubles quarterfinals on Thursday. Unfortunately, Mboko, ranked No. 9 in singles, sustained an injury during her match against Karolína Plíšková on Wednesday.
The knee injury forced Mboko to retire, and she subsequently withdrew from the tournament, thus prematurely ending Williams’ return. Serena managed this with composure, focusing on the enjoyment of playing tennis and setting an example for her children. She shared an Instagram post featuring a carousel of six photos, among them a picture of Olympia joyfully watching her serve. ‘Some moments mean more than trophies [red heart emoji] @olympiaohanian,’ remarked Williams in her post. ‘What a fun and memorable week at @hsbcchampionships. Thank you to everyone who made it so special. Wishing you a speedy recovery, @vickymboko. Can’t wait to see you back on court.’ Williams also included an image with Mboko in her Instagram Story, conveying, ‘You’re an incredible talent, and you’ll be back out there in no time. Wishing you a speedy recovery.’ Mboko shared the post, adding a mending heart and hugging emoji.
For tennis enthusiasts, Williams’ return isn’t over. She is slated to play in the Berlin Tennis Open next week, partnering in doubles with Karolina Muchova, according to The Times’ tennis correspondent Tom Kershaw. ‘Every tournament I participate in now feels remarkable, and Berlin is no different,’ Williams stated on the tournament’s official website. ‘I’m thrilled to compete before the German fans and to keep building momentum during the grass-court season.’
