The upcoming gubernatorial election in Nevada is attracting significant attention. Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford will challenge Republican Governor Joe Lombardo in November. This race, classified as a toss-up by The Cook Political Report, promises to be closely watched.
Ford, who secured his position as the party’s nominee, emerged victorious over five other Democrats. His campaign targeted Governor Lombardo, criticizing his handling of increasing costs in groceries, gas, housing, and healthcare. Ford also attempts to connect Lombardo to former President Trump, whose popularity in Nevada has waned. Trump previously endorsed Lombardo, securing a win in the state by 3 points two years ago.
Lombardo, with a successful primary win against six challengers, boasts a record of accomplishments. Despite Democratic majorities in the state legislature, he managed to pass a bipartisan bill enhancing school district accountability and tightened criminal justice reforms. Additionally, he contributed to making housing more accessible and secured public financing for a Major League Baseball stadium for the Oakland Athletics.
The governor’s financial resources are substantial, bolstering his candidacy. However, in Nevada, voter contact and messaging are crucial. Ford might have an edge here with the powerful Culinary Union endorsing him. This union, representing hospitality workers, plays a pivotal role in voter turnout. It operates polling sites in casinos and resorts, reaching its 60,000 members across the state.
