Use of Anime Imagery by Trump Sparks Tensions with Japan

2 weeks ago 0

A recent trend by President Trump to use Japanese anime-style imagery on his social media has stirred controversy in Japan. This action has drawn criticism and concerns about the impact on diplomatic ties.

Criticism from Japan

On Friday, the Japanese government voiced disapproval of President Trump’s use of Japanese companies’ intellectual property without permission. A government minister warned this could harm the reputation of Japan’s creative industries. The Japanese government has formally communicated their stance to the United States.

Social Media Reaction

Last Saturday, President Trump posted a video on Truth Social. The video appeared to be AI-generated and showed him dressed as a popular character from the anime series “Naruto.” This depiction quickly led to backlash from anime fans who criticized the unauthorized use of anime imagery.

Ongoing Tension

This incident follows previous months of tension regarding the White House’s adoption of various Japanese pop culture icons online. These have included characters from well-known franchises such as “Dragon Ball,” “Yu-Gi-Oh!” and “Pokémon.” Notably, anime imagery appeared in a TikTok video from the White House in March, which celebrated U.S. airstrikes on Iran.

Lack of Response

The White House and the State Department have not addressed the recent criticism from Japan. Companies involved in the production of “Naruto,” like Bandai Namco Entertainment and Studio Pierrot, have also not commented on the issue.

Broader Backlash

The Trump administration’s frequent use of animated imagery is not limited to Japanese anime. They have also drawn from franchises like “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Marvel, DC Comics, and “Call of Duty.” However, the reaction is particularly strong in Japan, where anime holds cultural significance and is entwined with national identity.
