The San Antonio Spurs face disappointment after losing the 2026 NBA Finals to the New York Knicks in five games, despite holding a positive playoff point differential. While the Knicks celebrated their first championship victory since 1973, the Spurs are left pondering their missed opportunities.
Scott Kacsmar highlights that the Spurs achieved a +173 playoff point differential, yet failed to secure the championship title. Throughout the series, San Antonio established double-digit leads in every game, only to collapse in the latter stages of four games.
Rodger Sherman notes that the Knicks now hold records for the first, fourth, and sixth largest comebacks in NBA Finals history. Their remarkable comeback in Game 4 involved overcoming a 29-point deficit at Madison Square Garden on June 10.
“One of many things I learned is the margin of error is very, very thin,” stated Spurs star Victor Wembanyama after Game 5. As the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, he acknowledged, “We dominated much of this series, but our mistakes were heavily punished. We can’t afford such ups and downs.”
Wembanyama expressed frustration over the lengthy journey back to the Finals, remarking, “There’s probably 100 games before we can be back in the Finals. I don’t know how to say it in English, but I’ll have to hold that inside and focus on execution over those matches.”
The Spurs find solace in their past performance, as their +147 playoff point differential in 2013 was also among the highest for a team not winning the title. They returned stronger to claim the 2014 NBA Finals victory. According to ESPN, early 2027 NBA Finals odds slightly favor the Spurs for a comeback.
