Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once praised President Donald Trump as Israel’s greatest ally in the White House. Now, Trump is openly criticizing Netanyahu with rhetoric that previous U.S. leaders avoided. Trump claimed credit for Israel’s existence, stating, “without me, there would be no Israel,” and described Netanyahu’s judgment harshly. Netanyahu has served through four U.S. presidents, creating tensions but none as vocal as with Trump. The conflict began with their joint diplomatic efforts.
Current tensions arise as Trump criticizes Israeli actions in Lebanon, which could hinder U.S.-Iran negotiations. Trump aims for a deal amid domestic political pressure from an unpopular war and rising gas prices. Aaron David Miller, Middle East adviser to several U.S. administrations, noted Trump is willing to use leverage to achieve his goal of ending the conflict.
An agreement is set to be signed on Friday at Burgenstock resort near Luzern. At the G7 summit in France, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s recent actions. “Without the U.S., there would be no Israel,” Trump said. “Without me, there would be no Israel because no other president was willing to do what I did.” He urged Netanyahu to be responsible regarding Lebanon.
Bipartisan support for Israel in Washington has weakened over time. Liberals criticize Israel’s Palestinian policies, while conservatives question U.S. support’s importance. Antisemitism concerns persist across the political spectrum. Trump’s remarks drew quick backlash from left-leaning groups. Halie Soifer, of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, found Trump’s comments offensive to most Jews who care about Israel.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris also disagreed with Netanyahu during Gaza conflicts but avoided being labeled anti-Israel. Conservative pro-Israel groups are split on the seriousness of Trump’s criticism. Matt Brooks of the Republican Jewish Coalition saw it as family disagreement, noting Trump’s past support, such as moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and facilitating Israeli hostages’ return from Gaza.
While Biden criticized Netanyahu’s Gaza war handling, Brooks emphasized Trump’s goodwill reservoir on this issue. Pro-Israel advocate Mort Klein suggested Trump should have kept criticisms private, given his past praise of authoritarian leaders. Klein, president of the conservative Zionist Organization of America, worries that public comments aim to appeal to Israel critics due to increasing American hostility toward Israel.
