In recent developments, Ukraine has showcased its ability to hit Russian targets through drone attacks. Social media is abuzz with videos of a significant strike on Moscow, illustrating Ukraine’s capability to retaliate against Russian assaults. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized this by stating, “If Ukraine burns, then your Moscow will burn as well.”
Despite the success of drone operations, experts note the limitations of this tactic. While effective, drones cannot match the devastation caused by ballistic missiles. These missiles can carry much larger explosive payloads and travel at high speeds, making interception difficult. This enables them to cause greater destruction than drones.
Russia has repeatedly used ballistic missiles to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses. These attacks have severely impacted Ukraine’s infrastructure, particularly targeting the energy grid during harsh winter conditions. This has created a major imbalance in the ongoing conflict, with significant pressure on Ukrainian defenses.
Ukrainian officials recognize their current limitations and are actively working to develop their own ballistic missile capabilities. They believe this advancement could shift the dynamics of the war, possibly prompting Russia to negotiate.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated on national television, “Ukrainian ballistic capability will fundamentally change the nature of this war.” He assured that expectations are not exaggerated, asserting that these missiles will soon be operational and used against Russia.
