After 27 years, Jessie, the beloved cowgirl doll voiced by Joan Cusack, finally takes center stage in ‘Toy Story 5’. Cusack played a significant role in shaping Jessie’s character from the beginning.

Joan Cusack, aside from her work with ‘Toy Story’, chose to leave Hollywood mostly to focus on raising her children. Despite that, she runs a gift shop in Chicago. She stated, “I was trying to find something creative to do and still be at home.”

Sarah Bahr, in a recent piece, highlighted Cusack’s excitement about Jessie’s role in the new film. “I was so excited,” Cusack said from Pixar’s headquarters in Emeryville, California. At 63, Cusack felt that there was an important story for girls in this film.

Since Jessie’s introduction in ‘Toy Story 2’ in 1999, Cusack has consistently brought her to life. Jessie’s evolution has been remarkable. Initially designed as a talking cactus sidekick known as Señorita Cactus, Jessie was meant to sway Woody with charm. However, her role developed significantly over time.

Cusack, who shares Jessie’s vibrant personality, has a notable comedic record. She appeared in films like ‘Working Girl’ (1988) and ‘In & Out’ (1997) and was featured on ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 1985-1986.

In an interview, Cusack talked about a crucial suggestion she made for ‘Toy Story 3’ and her decision to leave Hollywood. Her gift shop is inspired by a Barbra Streisand character, which reflects her continued passion for creativity.
