Andrean junior third baseman Chase Nelson shared his perspective after their school’s field and community endured a tornado on June 11. The impact of such events went beyond the Class 3A state championship game result. Nelson expressed the emotions of the team, saying, “It’s been really sad. But we got a lot closer as a team because we wanted to do it for the school and the community. We got here, but we just couldn’t do it.”
The top-ranked Andrean 59ers did not repeat as state champions, falling 9-3 to Guerin Catholic at Victory Field. This loss prevented Andrean from securing a record-setting 10th title. Guerin, participating in their first state championship game, impressed with their performance. Andrean coach Dave Pishkur spoke highly of Guerin’s team, acknowledging their strength, “They were the far superior team today. Their pitcher is good. They have more hitters than us.”
In the game’s highlights, Nelson contributed to Andrean’s efforts. He went 2-for-4 with a run-scoring single. He was also active defensively at third base, managing crucial plays. Despite Andrean using five pitchers, Guerin’s offensive prowess proved challenging. “We’re here because of our pitching staff,” Pishkur stated. “We walk nine guys and hit three guys, which is the worst we’ve done all year.”
Guerin starter Tate Troxell, committed to Alabama, played a pivotal role, allowing just one run while striking out 12. “He’s good,” Pishkur noted about Troxell’s performance.
Despite Andrean not repeating as champions like Tyler Nelson, an Andrean alumnus, Chase Nelson found value in the experience. “It’s great,” he said. “Everyone should deserve a chance to come and play with the big crowd.”
Senior outfielder Luke Goben contributed with a two-run double in the seventh. Under trying circumstances, the team aimed to maintain focus. “It was no excuse,” said Pishkur about the week’s challenges. “Tough week for them with losing their field.”
Andrean is set to move to Class 4A next season. Pishkur remains optimistic, believing in the program’s resilience and potential. “The one thing cool about our program is it’s next man up,” he said. Looking ahead, Andrean will face the tougher competition in 4A baseball. “That’s a lot harder than 3A,” Pishkur acknowledged.
