President Trump made a surprising decision on Friday by endorsing both candidates in the Republican runoff for the South Carolina governor race. This move followed his initial support of Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette in late May.
His endorsement has been a key factor in many contested Republican races, particularly in Senate and House primaries this year. However, his involvement in the governor’s races during the midterms has been mixed.
Though Trump initially backed Pamela Evette to become South Carolina’s next governor, it was insufficient to prevent a runoff. Keeping a keen eye on his political influence, Trump announced on Truth Social his endorsement of Ms. Evette’s opponent as well, Alan Wilson, the state’s attorney general for 15 years.
“I can’t hurt one of them by only endorsing the other, so, therefore, I am going to endorse, for Governor of South Carolina, both Pam Evette and Alan Wilson,” Trump stated, adding that success is assured, “With either one you can’t go wrong.”
Shortly after Trump’s announcement, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott endorsed Alan Wilson. This added to the growing support for Wilson, who had been leading Evette in several polls before the upcoming Tuesday runoff. Trump’s endorsement could further strengthen Wilson’s position.
