At 85, Ann-Margret continues to embrace speed and freedom. The legendary actress known for her roles in Bye Bye Birdie and Viva Las Vegas is offering fans a glimpse into her life by auctioning cherished items through Julien’s Auctions starting June 23. Among the items is her custom 1997 Harley-Davidson Sportster XL883 Hugger, which features a unique mauve-and-daisy design and has been a part of her life for over two decades.
Ann-Margret’s words reflect her deep passion for riding. In discussing her love for motorcycles, she emphasized, “Freedom, freedom, freedom!” She fondly recalls her uncle’s big motorcycle in Sweden, which sparked her enduring enthusiasm for riding her own bike.
I never have been [scared]. I love the speed. I try not to go too fast, although I do love the speed. I’m joyful when I get on that bike. I don’t get scared. That’s the problem!
As a devoted motorcycle enthusiast since the 1960s, Ann-Margret captured attention during a 1971 photoshoot riding a chopper down a Las Vegas highway. Her love for motorcycles remains unwavering, and she doesn’t let side glances from other bikers distract her from the joy of riding.
Ann-Margret’s independent nature extends beyond her passion for motorcycles. At home, a sign from her late husband, Roger Smith, reads, “You can tell a Swede, but you can’t tell her much.” This sentiment reflects her spirited and happy outlook on life.
The upcoming auction features many memorable items from her career, including an ivory-and-orange gown worn on The Ed Sullivan Show and during a performance for President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Ann-Margret remembers the excitement of voting for Kennedy as a pivotal moment in her life.
Many of Ann-Margret’s costumes, designed by Bob Mackie, have solidified her status as a Hollywood icon. Despite her sex symbol image, she warmly welcomes admiration from fans, expressing her appreciation for their support throughout her career.
One of the auctioned items is a signed book by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Arnold’s Bodyshaping for Women. Ann-Margret reflects on discipline and longevity, values shared with Schwarzenegger that have helped sustain her long-standing career.
Ann-Margret remains grateful for the life and energy she has been given, attributing her positivity to the examples set by her parents. Her approach to life emphasizes engaging in activities she loves without letting negativity hold her back. Her enduring love for Harley-Davidsons has contributed to her youthful spirit.
