Vandalism Allegations and Paint Peeling at Washington’s Reflecting Pool

The Reflecting Pool in Washington is facing issues with peeling paint after undergoing renovation ordered by President Donald Trump. The president, via his social media platform, expressed concerns that the damage was intentional. He stated, “We’ve had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool.” Trump highlighted incidents like damage to the grass around the pool and harm to the newly installed interior surface.

Despite Trump’s allegations, no details have been presented to back his claims. The agencies responsible for maintenance, including the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department, haven’t responded to requests for comments.

According to The Washington Post, Park Police arrested an individual on Friday for peeling paint from the pool. Reports suggest the pool’s condition also includes algae clouds in the water and patches of blue paint coming off the bottom. President Trump has emphasized that something more insidious might be happening, suggesting chemicals were intentionally used to damage the site.

His comments referred to numbers, “86 47,” etched onto discolored grass on the National Mall, which some authorities speculate could threaten Trump, the 47th president. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.

Efforts by National Park Service employees to clean the pool include using vacuums to remove debris, as seen on June 20, 2026. Despite these efforts, parts of the pool still show peeling sections of coating, exposing the rocky bottom.

The situation arose amidst preparations for America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. President Trump had overseen a $14 million renovation to enhance the pool’s aesthetic, including painting the bottom “American flag blue” to eliminate its usual green algae tint. The treatment of the pool with chemicals aimed at killing algae led to areas of the blue paint detaching.
