Violence During Independence Day Weekend

The Independence Day holiday weekend saw numerous acts of violence across the country, leaving victims injured in several locations. In New York City, two NYPD officers sustained injuries, while four children were among those shot during a mass shooting at a family barbecue in Brooklyn.

Details of Coney Island Shooting

The shooting in Brooklyn’s Coney Island occurred on Saturday night during a family gathering. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared that eight individuals, including four children, were shot. The suspect, an unidentified man dressed in black and wearing a ski mask, fired several rounds before escaping. Investigators found 10 shell casings and an extended magazine firearm at the scene.

There were no signs of argument or altercation before the gunshots. Authorities are looking into whether this incident may be linked to a gang-related homicide on the same block earlier in the week. Seven of the shooting victims are expected to recover, but a 21-year-old woman who was shot in the chest is in critical condition. The children injured are aged 6, 7, 12, and 14.

No arrests have been made, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the violence, underscoring that such acts have no place in the city.

Crown Heights Incident Involving NYPD Officers

In a separate incident early Sunday, two NYPD officers were injured in the Crown Heights neighborhood during a confrontation with an armed 18-year-old suspect. Officers on a special July 4th violence-reduction assignment saw the suspect with a firearm on surveillance around 4 a.m.

While officers attempted to engage the suspect as he approached an unmarked police vehicle, he fired at them. Officers returned fire, but the suspect was not hit. He was arrested following a brief pursuit, and a 9 mm handgun was retrieved. Detective Robert Carroll sustained bruises after being struck in his vest, and another officer had minor injuries to his face and shoulder. Both officers are expected to recover completely.

Other Incidents Nationwide

There were additional reports of shootings during holiday celebrations in other states:

Authorities detained six individuals for questioning and retrieved multiple firearms during the ongoing investigation.
  • Pensacola, Florida: Early Sunday morning, one person died and five sustained injuries in a downtown shooting. Pensacola police made several arrests at the scene and continue to investigate.
  • Mount Clemens, Michigan: Five people, including two minors, were wounded during a block party on Saturday night. Reports of gunfire near Court and Clemens streets prompted intervention by Macomb County sheriff’s deputies. All victims were hospitalized, and investigations persist.
