In St. Augustine, Florida, a heated pickleball game escalated into violence, culminating in a man suffering head injuries and a woman facing jail time. The incident unfolded after a disagreement during the match, with police reporting that a woman struck a man multiple times using her pickleball paddle.
Michele Bannister, 47, was charged with a felony, based on a report by News 4 JAX. Bannister claimed self-defense in the heat of the argument. However, the arrest report indicated that both eyewitness accounts and the victim’s statement contradicted her claim, stating her son was not in any peril.
The altercation occurred on May 31, stemming from a dispute about who should retrieve the ball. This dispute rapidly escalated, resulting in physical violence.
The argument intensified when Bannister’s son was addressed by the man after the game. Bannister then intervened and, as described by deputies, repeatedly struck the man on the head with her paddle, resulting in several bleeding facial cuts.
Bannister, an orthopedic nurse, now faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. She was also charged with providing false identification to law enforcement, after misleading deputies with an incorrect name twice.
Onlookers, including Pam Hatch, noted as North Florida’s Ambassador for USA Pickleball, witnessed the incident and its aftermath. Hatch, also known as Pickleball Pam, recounted the intense scene, explaining that the assailant managed to deliver several strong blows before being pulled away from the victim. Hatch noted the significant blood loss, assisting the victim as blood covered the area.
The morning incident at the pickleball courts was indeed severe for all involved, especially the injured man.
