Wyndham Clark Secures Second U.S. Open Title at Shinnecock Hills

2 days ago 0

On June 21, 2026, Wyndham Clark displayed exceptional composure on the brink of a historic collapse. He managed to fend off rival Sam Burns and a less supportive Shinnecock Hills gallery to claim his second U.S. Open title in four years.

Starting the final round with a six-shot lead, Clark finished with a 3-over 73, securing a one-shot victory over Burns. His achievement marked him as the first wire-to-wire winner since Martin Kaymer’s victory at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2014.

The competition was intense, with Clark’s lead dwindling to one shot after just five holes. Yet, he persisted throughout the round.

Clark’s defining moment came with a challenging drive on the par-5 16th. Despite the struggle, he managed to clear a bunker and positioned his 8-iron on the back of the green. He then sank a 30-foot birdie putt that expanded his lead to two shots with two holes remaining. The reception from the gallery was understated as most of their support was directed towards Scottie Scheffler, who was aiming for a career Grand Slam.

Scheffler did not get closer than three shots due to his own mistakes. Despite Clark’s final round score being the highest since Graeme McDowell at Pebble Beach, he emerged victorious. At 32, the American golfer has secured two U.S. Open titles alongside two wins this past month.

Sam Burns finished strong with a 67, yet missed birdie chances and a three-putt bogey at the 15th hampered his attempt to overtake Clark.
