The body of singer Oliver Tree returned to California after he perished in a helicopter crash over Rio de Janeiro. Tree was one of six passengers killed in the tragic incident. His social media channels announced his return to California, stating, ‘Oliver is now back in California where he can finally rest.’
The collision occurred on June 14 when two helicopters crashed, resulting in the loss of all six lives aboard. The Associated Press identified the other victims as Gaspar Prim Díaz, an Argentine YouTuber known as Gaspi, another Argentine named Lucas Vignale, and Brazilians Lucas Brito, Charles Marsillac, and Alexandre Souza. Investigations into the accident are focusing on potential human error by pilots or air traffic controllers.
Tree, aged 32, was on a world tour performing in South America. A show was scheduled for June 6 in São Paulo. The crash site was located in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. A post on Sunday expressed gratitude for the support and remembrance of the unique and influential artist, saying, ‘The constant love, support, and positivity is helping the family, friends, and collaborators make it through these extremely difficult times.’
Oliver Tree, whose full name was Oliver Tree Nickell, hailed from Santa Cruz. His father, Jesse Nickell, received the tragic news from a music collaborator in Brazil. ‘Peace be with Oliver,’ Jesse Nickell expressed via text last week.
Known for his colorful fashion, mullet hairstyle, thin mustache, and positive demeanor, Tree’s motto was, ‘No matter how strange you think you look, no matter how ugly you feel, you are beautiful.’ He collaborated with leading figures in pop and electronic dance music. His hit tracks ‘Life Goes On’ and ‘Miss You’ achieved rankings on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022.
Following the news of his death, tributes from fans and colleagues celebrated Tree’s impact beyond music charts. A social media post revealed that Tree had been developing an endowment named ‘Dr. Oliver Tree’s Extremely Epic Grant For Baby Geniuses,’ which will continue to meet Tree’s final wishes of spreading joy, love, and art. On the ‘Zack Sang Show’ on YouTube in April, Tree discussed the grant and remarked on the posthumous appreciation often received by artists. ‘That’s when people appreciate you, when you’re not there anymore,’ he shared.
His Instagram statement offered reassurance, stating, ‘Your legacy will live on forever.’
