Seattle Mass Shooting Incident at Food Festival

A 15-year-old has been apprehended, while police continue the search for a second suspect involved in a deadly shooting during a Seattle festival. Three people died, and four others suffered injuries during the incident at the Seattle Center, according to statements from Mayor Katie Wilson and police officials.

Mayor Wilson explained the investigation is ongoing, but preliminary findings suggest the teenager fired into the crowd. No homicide charges are pending against the minor, who is held in juvenile detention on charges related to firearms violations and first-degree assault. Initial court proceedings for the juvenile are expected to begin Monday.

Seattle Police Department Chief Shon Barnes confirmed that two individuals exchanged gunfire outside the Seattle Center Armory. Many bystanders were caught in this crossfire. The police urged avoiding the area for safety reasons as an active manhunt continues for the second shooter.

The investigation revealed that a 19-year-old man and a 44-year-old man died on the scene despite first responders’ efforts. A 56-year-old woman, critically injured, was transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. Among the injured were a 2-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and a 40-year-old woman. Notably, the toddler was initially in stable condition but is now reportedly recovering satisfactorily. Other victims either had minor injuries or have been discharged.

Police are also assessing if a 27-year-old man, who admitted himself to a hospital, might be an additional victim. Confirmation of his involvement is pending.

Hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg mentioned that injuries sustained included those to the arm, abdomen, and legs. Mayor Wilson condemned the violence, emphasizing the profound impact on families and the broader community.

“Impacted families are living through the worst moments of their lives,” Mayor Wilson declared. She stressed the support for grieving families, care for the wounded, and providing accurate information to the public as priority responsibilities.

Governor Bob Ferguson and State Patrol SWAT officers were promptly briefed and sent assistance to the scene. Governor Ferguson expressed thoughts for the victims’ families and ensured that safety measures were reinforced. Emergency services arrived at Seattle Center shortly after 6 p.m., amidst the Bite of Seattle festival.

Representative Pramila Jayapal expressed her horror and sorrow for the victims and their families, thanking officers and responders for their efforts. Similar sentiments came from King County Executive Girmay Zahilay, who emphasized the cultural significance of the event marred by violence.

Witnesses shared their harrowing accounts. Kayla Carris, present at the festival, described the chaos as people ran for safety. Todd Behrends recounted hearing gunshots and observing people vying to escape, underscoring the panic and urgency of the situation.
