Controversy Arises as NYC Mayor’s Wife Attends Wellness Retreat Abroad

Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, faced criticism after choosing to attend an Islamic ‘spiritual wellness’ retreat in Mallorca, Spain, during the Fourth of July weekend. This decision coincided with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, sparking controversy among city officials and the public.

Duwaji was reportedly seen at Newark International Airport before boarding a flight to Palma, heading to the sold-out retreat organized by The Women Sanctuary. Her absence from the semi-quincentennial celebration drew comments from city council members and the public.

Nothing says ‘America 250’ quite like skipping the celebration for a Mediterranean vacation, but I am not surprised because she has made her hatred for America very evident, Councilwoman Joann Ariola, R-Queens, remarked.

Councilman Frank Morano, R-Staten Island, expressed disappointment, emphasizing the importance of the milestone for the city and country. He highlighted that while elected officials and their families can take vacations, attending significant events like America’s 250th anniversary is crucial.

Morano stated, No one is saying elected officials and their families can’t take vacations, but this was a moment to show up for the city and for the country, and she missed it.

Conservative commentator Arynne Wexler also weighed in, posting photos and criticizing the timing of Duwaji’s trip, linking it to an advisory from Mamdani about lowering air conditioning use.

Mamdani delivered a speech marking the 250th anniversary at City Hall, highlighting efforts to manage the city’s heatwave, including expanding cooling centers and extending pool hours.

The retreat attended by Duwaji was themed ‘Plants Of The Quran | 6th Edition,’ focusing on plants like olives, pomegranates, dates, and figs, with accompanying workshops, meals, and spiritual reflections.
