Cape Verde’s Remarkable World Cup Journey Continues with Draw Against Uruguay

Cape Verde’s inspiring run at its first World Cup continues. The small island nation, which surprised everyone by holding Spain to a goalless draw last week, managed a 2-2 tie against Uruguay on Sunday. This is noteworthy as Uruguay is a two-time World Cup champion.

Kevin Pina scored Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup goal with a free kick, while Helio Varela provided the equalizer. This result boosts Cape Verde’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage in the expanded 48-team tournament.

“This is something we owe to other smaller national teams — teams that struggled to qualify for a world tournament,” said Cape Verde’s coach Pedro Leitão Brito through an interpreter. He emphasized the squad’s belief in reaching the next stage.

Cape Verde, sharing Group H’s two points with Uruguay, will face Saudi Arabia next. The coach highlighted the resilience and determination of his team, stating the nation’s aim to prove that even small countries with financial challenges can stand equal with major teams.

Cape Verde comprises a group of islands off Africa’s West coast, with a landmass of about 4,000 square kilometers and a population of approximately half a million. This makes it the third-smallest nation by population to qualify for the World Cup.

The match in Miami featured strong support for Uruguay from the fans. Nevertheless, Cape Verdean players remained focused. Coach Leitão Brito commented, “Once you’re on the pitch, a lot of things become equal.”

Cape Verde’s fans, thrilled by their team’s achievements, celebrated Pina’s goal, which broke through Uruguay’s defensive wall past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Despite first-half goals by Maxi Araújo and Agustin Canobbio, Helio Varela seized upon an error by Uruguay to score his first international goal, delighting the fans.

“I had dreamed of this,” Varela was quoted by FIFA, expressing joy at scoring during his World Cup debut.

Uruguay’s coach, Marcelo Bielsa, expressed that the result was deserved. His team couldn’t capitalize on late opportunities and now faces Spain in a critical group match, needing a favorable result to advance.

The game was a landmark for Cape Verde’s Vozinha, a standout performer recognized for his prior success against Spain. He shared the field with Muslera, marking the first World Cup match with two starting goalkeepers over 40.
