Mohamed Salah approached the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup with a measured outlook. Speaking to ESPN, he stated, “I think we need to focus on our camp and train hard. We’ll see in the group. We want to make the people proud, and we’ll do our best.” His comment reflects his intent to inspire hope, despite past disappointments.
Salah was instrumental in securing Egypt’s spot in the World Cup for the first time since 1990. However, The Pharaohs faced challenges in the past, losing all group stage matches in the 2018 Cup and failing to qualify in 2022. Now, returning for possibly his final World Cup, Salah invigorated Egypt’s chances with a stellar display against New Zealand at BC Place in Vancouver on June 21.
“What happened today is history for us, as Egyptians,” Salah expressed after his performance earned him the title of Man of the Match. “It seems to other teams, it’s okay, it’s fine. You see a lot of teams win games, but, for us, as Egyptians, it’s like it doesn’t happen often.”
New Zealand took an early lead with a 15th-minute goal from Finn Surman. Egypt’s Mostafa Zico tied the score in the 58th minute. Salah then turned the tide with a goal in the 67th minute and an assist to Trezeguet in the 82nd minute, leading to a 3-1 victory. This marked Egypt’s first-ever win at a World Cup.
The Pharaohs began their 2026 World Cup journey with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, where Salah also found the net. Now, Egypt leads Group G with 4 points. Although unexpected, they stand with “over a 99% chance” to make it to the knockout stage, and a 61% chance to top the group, as reported by The Athletic.
Historically, Egypt has reached the knockout stage only once, back in 1934. Hopeful to make history again, they are set to face Iran at Lumen Field in Seattle on June 26. Fans continue to admire Salah, whose prowess in critical matches was long celebrated by Liverpool supporters. Many eagerly await his continued impact in the tournament.
