Clive Davis, a household name in the music industry, passed away at the age of 94 at his Manhattan home. Known for a career spanning over fifty years, he transformed stars like Whitney Houston and Barry Manilow into icons. Mr. Davis began his journey from a midlevel legal post at Columbia Records and rose to become a dominant force in the industry.

Davis’s family announced his death, following his recent hospitalization for respiratory issues. He stood out as one of the rare nonperformers who achieved widespread recognition. In the late 1960s, Davis was instrumental in steering Columbia toward the rock era, championing artists such as Janis Joplin and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He also motivated jazz legend Miles Davis to connect with the younger Woodstock audience.

Beyond rock, Davis excelled in nurturing R&B and pop talent at Arista and J labels, promoting stars like Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson. He identified hip-hop’s commercial potential and revitalized the careers of musicians like Carlos Santana and Rod Stewart achieving massive album sales.

In 2021, Davis organized a “homecoming” concert in Central Park, directed by Mayor Bill de Blasio, celebrating New York’s emergence from the pandemic. Although a lightning storm interrupted the event, it was set to feature icons Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon.

Within the industry, he was reputed as a determined creator of hits, embodying resilience and longevity amid frequent corporate upheavals. His final role was chief creative officer at Sony Music Entertainment, symbolizing continuity through transitions.
