The Milwaukee Bucks have traded Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP, along with forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. This trade marks the end of a historic period for the Bucks, highlighted by securing their first NBA title in five decades.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Miami Heat will receive Antetokounmpo and Portis in exchange for several assets. These include Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis. Additionally, Miami will provide three future first-round picks, the No. 13 pick in the upcoming draft, a future pick swap, and a second-round pick.
The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat were the main contenders for acquiring Antetokounmpo before the NBA Draft. This trade follows a period of uncertainty for the Bucks, especially after head coach Mike Budenholzer left in 2023. The team saw a steady decline, culminating in missing the 2026 playoffs.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, aged 31, is a significant figure in the team’s history. He led them to a championship in 2021, securing his place among the NBA’s all-time greats. Besides being a two-time MVP, he also earned Finals MVP honors. Despite several underwhelming seasons and injuries in the 2025-26 season, the Bucks chose a new direction by trading him.
Milwaukee decided to maximize the value of Antetokounmpo rather than stick with an expensive, inflexible roster. The Miami Heat, led by President Pat Riley, saw an opportunity. Riley, known for sacrificing future assets to win titles, has landed a cornerstone player to enhance the team’s prospects.
