Tiger Woods made a significant appearance at a press conference for the PGA Tour on Tuesday morning. This marked his first official public engagement since his DUI arrest in March and his subsequent rehabilitation. Woods, a key figure on the Tour’s Future Competition Committee, expressed his gratitude for having the opportunity to introduce Brian Rolapp, the CEO of the PGA Tour.
Woods faced legal issues earlier in the year when he was arrested for DUI following a two-car crash near his Jupiter Island home in Florida. At the scene, authorities noted his lethargic condition and discovered hydrocodone pills. Despite the circumstances, breathalyzer tests showed no alcohol consumption. Following his plea of not guilty, Woods received permission to undergo treatment abroad and reportedly attended a rehab program in Zurich, Switzerland.
The PGA Tour has formalized several recommendations from the Future Competition Committee, leading to noteworthy changes set to commence in 2028. A new structure will introduce two concurrent series — the Championship Series and the Challenger Series — each offering unique formats and player opportunities.
The Championship Series will host roughly 23-24 events with about 120 players, scheduled to run from February to August. Ten out of the anticipated 15 PGA Tour Championship Series events for 2028 are already planned. Concurrently, the Challenger Series will feature larger fields of around 144 players, running alongside the Championship events. Players from the Championship Series will not be eligible to compete in the Challenger Series.
The Tour announced that the top 90 performers from the Championship Series will automatically qualify for the following season. Others risk relegation to the Challenger Series, from which at least 20 players will have the opportunity to advance to the Championship Series for the next season.
The Fall Series will provide a final opportunity for players to secure or enhance their status on the Championship Series, offering four to six events for this purpose. Furthermore, significant changes to the postseason include the introduction of match play and rotating the Tour Championship among prestigious courses previously untouched by the Tour.
