In Fremont, California, Tesla vehicles were spotted at the company’s factory lot this past August. Recently, however, attention has shifted due to a tragic incident in Texas. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation following a fatal crash involving a Tesla Model 3, which was using an automated driving feature.
The accident occurred near Houston when the Tesla collided with a home, tragically killing a 76-year-old woman named Martha Avila who was inside. This case is significant as it involves technology seen as pivotal to Tesla’s future. CEO Elon Musk is currently deploying robotaxis with similar technology in various U.S. cities. He encourages Tesla owners to add their vehicles to this fleet.
The driver involved conveyed to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office that the car was operating with the technology at the time of the crash. However, the extent of its influence on the incident remains uncertain. Authorities confirmed the driver was sober and cooperating with the investigation.
Video footage captured by KHOU-TV shows the Tesla traveling at high speed over a lawn before crashing into the house’s front room, causing extensive damage. Tesla has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the crash.
The NHTSA has scrutinized Tesla multiple times before, including investigating 58 incidents of Tesla cars breaking traffic laws while using self-driving tech. These instances resulted in crashes, injuries, and even fires. Moreover, the agency previously questioned Tesla’s compliance with crash reporting requirements.
Over the past decade, there have been 46 special investigations by the NHTSA into crashes involving Tesla’s self-driving or driver-assistance technologies. More than a dozen of these incidents had fatal outcomes.
Tesla’s stock faced declines at the start of the previous year after CEO Elon Musk became involved in political discussions. However, Musk has since pivoted the company’s narrative towards advancements in AI and robotaxis, resulting in a 16% increase in Tesla stock over the last year.
