FIFA Investigates World Cup Incidents Involving Argentina and Spain

GENEVA (AP) — FIFA is currently investigating the conduct of Argentina following the World Cup final. The investigation focuses on Argentina’s actions after Spain’s 1-0 victory in extra time, which led Spain to dethrone the defending champions. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has criticized the incidents, labeling them as ‘intolerable and unacceptable.’

FIFA’s disciplinary office has tasked a prosecutor with examining the events that unfolded after the match. The contentious moments included Argentina’s midfielder Leandro Paredes physically clashing with Spain players Eric Garcia and Gavi. Additionally, Spain’s captain Rodri was struck in the stomach while passing by Argentina defender Nahuel Molina.

‘It cannot be allowed,’ De la Fuente expressed on Spanish public broadcaster TVE, referencing the incidents he didn’t witness firsthand due to his engagement in celebrations with others.

De la Fuente expressed disappointment in the conduct of the players, stating, ‘I find it intolerable and unacceptable from players of that caliber, whom I had been praising in the days before and who have a magnificent coach.’

In response to the incidents, Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala issued an apology for his altercation with Dani Olmo, describing his action as a shove rather than a punch.

De la Fuente commended his players’ professionalism during the MetLife Stadium confrontation, highlighting their composed demeanor despite provocation. ‘I want to highlight our behavior in the face of that kind of aggression and provocation,’ he noted, praising their professional conduct.

The Spanish team displayed respect by forming a guard of honor for the Argentina squad as the latter proceeded to the podium to receive medals from U.S. President Donald Trump. However, during the trophy lifting by Rodri, most of the Argentina team demonstrated disapproval by turning their backs.
