Tragic Loss and Rescue Efforts After Venezuela Earthquakes

On Sunday, devastating news emerged from Venezuela. Lucas Trejo, an Argentine soccer star, lost his wife and two children in powerful earthquakes that rocked the country. Trejo plays for Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira, a second-division Venezuelan team. He spent three days searching through debris, hoping to find his family. The soccer team expressed their sorrow in an Instagram post, mourning the loss of Trejo’s family. They sought peace for their souls and offered comfort to Lucas and his loved ones in a separate message on X.

Trejo, aged 38, was at a training camp in Caracas when the earthquakes of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes struck on Wednesday evening. Lamentably, he hurried home to La Guaira, the state that suffered the most damage, only to find his residence reduced to rubble. Ricardo Ardiles, Trejo’s brother-in-law, shared harrowing details with CNN Español, describing the site as unrecognizable.

Venezuelan authorities revealed on Sunday that nearly 1,500 people have perished. Moreover, tens of thousands remain unaccounted for. Efforts to find survivors have been intense. Over the weekend, a U.S. search and rescue team saved a mother and her nine-month-old baby from a collapsed structure. The Virginia Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 posted a video showing the dramatic rescue of the mother. The U.S. State Department shared footage of the baby being carefully removed from debris, wrapped in blue fabric.

Reports from Venezuelans on the ground indicate a shortage of state rescue teams in the areas hardest hit. Despite this, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez asserted that the government was executing a full-scale response. On Saturday, Caracas officials reported rescuing about 200 people. Nevertheless, online databases starkly contrasted these figures, suggesting approximately 51,000 individuals remain missing.

In La Guaira, residents’ determination persists. A woman named Diana Sandrano spoke with CBS News, asserting her commitment to search for her missing brother indefinitely. She expressed a deep yearning for his survival and future. Such perseverance highlights the human spirit amid tragedy.
