Controversy Surrounds Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become a focal point for controversy and discussions about law enforcement, aesthetics, and environmental issues. President Donald Trump has revealed that six individuals were arrested in connection with recent damage to the site. This $14-million-plus renovation has turned into a contentious issue as the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary celebrations.

President Trump claimed through social media, without evidence, that there was a substantial “350-foot gash” in the paint of the Reflecting Pool. This comes as the administration faces a looming deadline to rectify the issues with the renovation before the anniversary celebrations next week. Trump promised to release images to support his claims of damage.

The president’s initiative aimed to beautify the century-old Reflecting Pool by draining it and painting the bottom in “American flag blue.” However, after the restoration, the site faced issues like algae bloom and peeling of the new coating. Trump accused vandalism as the cause of the peeling paint, again without evidence, stating, “It was purposefully and criminally done.” Seven more individuals were cited for allegedly damaging the pool.

The U.S. Park Police and Interior Department have not yet provided comments on the arrests or the president’s vandalism claims. One individual was arrested for interacting with the already peeling paint, reportedly touching a chunk before being instructed by a park worker.

Security measures have increased, with National Guard members and Park Police patrolling the area after Trump insisted vandals were responsible for the liner damage, without proof. Fencing has been added around the pool in response.

Trump announced that the Interior Department would release photos and videos of alleged vandalism, which he claimed existed. As of Tuesday afternoon, no such photos had been made public. Security in Washington, D.C., is expected to be heightened during the anniversary celebrations.

Trump indicated some of the pool’s water might be drained before or after the Fourth of July for permanent repairs. The scope, scale, or cost of these repairs remains unclear. Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a contractor on the project, acknowledged minor repair needs and plans to address them as part of the warranty, ensuring the liner’s integrity.

The Reflecting Pool has become more than a renovation project, particularly after an environmental group called on an investigation following the discovery of a dead Mallard duckling in the algae-laden waters. The Center for Biological Diversity urged enforcement of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, highlighting the adverse effects on wildlife.

The pool’s rehabilitation aims to clean and enhance an iconic site Trump described as neglected in the past. However, the new “American flag blue” coating seemed ineffective against algae bloom, which obscured the pool, evidenced by floating liner fragments. Workers have attempted to combat the algae using hydrogen peroxide, although this chemical can also act as a paint remover.

Experts link the dark lining to increased algae growth due to higher sunlight absorption, leading to elevated water temperatures that favor algae proliferation.
