The White House announced that President Trump has selected James R. Gadwood, a lawyer from the firm Miller & Chevalier, to serve as the chief counsel of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Gadwood’s nomination is notable due to his firm’s previous work representing Trump’s holding company, DJT Holdings LLC, in tax matters.
Gadwood has a background in representing large corporations and wealthy individuals during IRS audits. However, it remains unclear if he was directly involved in handling Trump’s tax affairs.
The nomination follows a controversial move by the Trump administration to halt IRS audits for Trump, his family, and their related entities. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche issued the directive, linked to resolving a legal dispute initiated by Trump against the IRS earlier in the year.
This suspension of audits, part of a settlement to prevent further leaks of Trump’s tax returns, raises significant legal concerns. Future IRS agents could face potential legal repercussions if they comply with this directive.
One particular tax issue still in dispute between Trump and the IRS could potentially cost Trump over $100 million if resolved unfavorably.
