A socialist candidate has emerged victorious over a long-standing Democratic incumbent in New York’s 13th Congressional District. Darializa Avila Chevalier, backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., who was serving his fifth term.
Avila Chevalier is a 32-year-old community organizer with a history of activism at Columbia University. During her time there, she was associated with Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a group known for provocative posts, including one calling for “Death to America.” Her campaign for Congress positioned her further left than even some prominent progressives and drew attention for her views on private property, police, and borders.
In one repost from 2021, Avila Chevalier advocated for radical changes, describing the abolition of borders, prisons, and police as “possible, necessary, and the only moral way forward.” She also stated that “all deportation is wrong” and supported the notion of abolishing borders entirely.
Despite these controversial views, Avila Chevalier secured essential backing from Mamdani and benefitted from an increasingly progressive voter base in New York. This support helped her win the Democratic nomination, making her the likely winner of the upcoming general election due to the district’s historical lack of Republican representation.
Mamdani defended his endorsement, suggesting that Avila Chevalier’s views had evolved over time and emphasizing her record of supporting individuals detained by ICE. He presented her as a champion for the district’s residents, highlighting her commitment to combating displacement and advocating for those often overlooked in politics.
Espaillat, a naturalized citizen who once entered the country illegally, faced a challenging debate with Avila Chevalier. She maintained her stance against deporting illegal aliens, even those with violent crime convictions.
The 13th Congressional District covers Upper Manhattan and parts of the West Bronx. With Avila Chevalier’s victory in the primary, the district is likely to see continued strong representation from the Democratic party in the upcoming election.
