White House AI Video Sparks Criticism Amid Economic Concerns

White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino faces criticism after posting an AI-generated video to social media. The video depicted a fictional after-party following the recent state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping. Scavino appeared in the video spraying champagne while riding a gold luggage cart through the White House. He was accompanied by his wife Erin Scavino and Eric and Lara Trump. The group was greeted by President Donald Trump.

In the video, Scavino expressed feeling inclined to share the post-state dinner party in transparency with the American people. Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment but has yet to respond.

Critics React To AI White House Party

Critics termed the posts “tone deaf,” highlighting concerns about the cost of living among Americans. Food prices increased by 2.7% in August compared to the previous year, and grocery prices were 2.2% higher year-over-year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Additionally, June gasoline prices rose by 26.7%, and electricity prices increased by 4% compared to the previous year, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows.

The Lincoln Project’s official X account shared the video, stating, “You’re struggling. They’re partying.” Carrie Prejean Boller, a previously conservative voice, criticized the video. She condemned it as tone deaf considering many Americans cannot afford basic necessities.

Anti-Trump Republican Sarah Longwell labeled the moment as “Real fall of Rome s***.” Trump faces declining approval ratings, with 37%—the lowest for a president entering a midterm election, according to Wall Street Journal polls. Within the same poll, 65% of respondents rated the economy negatively, and 60% felt Trump’s economic policies worsened the situation.

Scavino’s video isn’t isolated. On September 25, another AI video showcased a so-called “lost Xi camera roll.” It included images of a supposed party with personalities like Elon Musk, Trump, the first lady, Xi Jinping, and others. The video imagined scenarios such as riding boats on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, sitting on Lincoln’s statue knee, riding horses through the White House, and Trump doing a keg stand. The video garnered over 10 million views. Elon Musk commented on X, “I kinda wish it was real tbh.”
